Every year, Chesham & District Amateur Radio Society sets up a demonstration radio station at Brill Windmill over the second weekend in May, in support of the national “Mills on the Air” event. We use the special event callsign GB0BWM, issued to CDARS by Ofcom.
This year we operated from Brill Windmill on Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th May 2022.
We operated the HF station on the ground floor of the Windmill, and the VHF station on the first floor. This year the HF station was mainly on 7MHz (40m), as conditions on 80m were not good. The VHF station was on 144MHz (2m) FM, although one station asked us to QSY to 70cm.
Brill Windmill is open to visitors on Sunday afternoons in summer from 2.00pm – 5.00pm. When CDARS is in occupation we are delighted to act as stand-in tour guides, showing visitors around this ancient piece of heritage.
You can read more about Brill Windmill HERE. Sadly one of the sails was snapped by the storm in October
last year and rot has been discovered in the opposite sail, this means that the Windmill Society are having to raise £20,000 to replace and repair the sails.
